Voter Accessibility

Our election judges can also assist you with "curbside voting," if you are unable to enter the polling place, or with marking your ballot inside the polling place. If you prefer, you can bring a friend or relative to the polling place to assist you with voting, with the permission of the election judge.
If you are unable to provide a signature or identifying mark, you may designate an agent to assist with all aspects of the registration and voting process, including signing applications and absentee or mail ballots.
Some voters with disabilities may find it easier to request an electronic ballot and vote with assistive technology on their home computers.

Late Registration
If you miss the regular registration deadline, you can still late register at the county election office in order to vote in any election.
To late register, visit the county election office in person and complete a voter registration application. Late registrants are issued a ballot at the time they register.* You can vote your ballot immediately in one of the provided booths at the elections office, or you can take the ballot with you and return it by 8 p.m. on election day.
Late registration is available beginning 30 days before the election during our normal business hours, 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. One the day before an election, late registration is open from only 8am to 12noon. On the day of the election, late registration is open for extended hours from 7am to 8pm.
To avoid the possibility of long lines, register before the close of regular registration or shortly thereafter.
*If a school election is conducted by the school's business office, and not the elections office, ballots will be issued to late registrants at the school office.
Absentee Voting
Any registered voter may vote by mail by submitting a completed application for absentee ballot. A voter may request to receive an absentee ballot for one specific election, or sign up to receive absentee ballots for every election. When a voter moves to a new address, they must update their information and again select whether or not they would like to be on the absentee list.
The application must be signed and delivered to the election office, 316 N Park Ave, Rm 168, Helena, MT 59623. The signed application may also be sent by email or faxed to 406-457-8598.
It is possible to designate another person to pick up your absentee ballot on your application. However, you may not request an absentee ballot for another individual: the application must be signed by the elector requesting the absentee ballot (unless the elector has designated an agent).
Absentee voting packets are mailed to all absentee voters between 15 and 25 days before the election, depending on the type of election. It is also possible to pick up an absentee voting packet at the time you apply, provided you apply in person and ballots are available at that time.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot is noon the day before an election. If you are unable to go to the polls due to a health emergency occurring between 5:00pm on the Friday preceding the election and 8:00pm on Election Day, you may request that an absentee board bring an absentee ballot to you. Contact us for more information.
Absentee ballots are due back to the election office by 8 p.m. election day.
